Women in Aerospace (WIA) is a registered student organization at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign whose goal is to promote and maintain women's interests in the field of aerospace engineering. WIA also aims to provide a supportive resource for current and prospective female aerospace engineers and foster a sense of community for women in the aerospace engineering department here at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
An outreach event hosted by State Farm Corporation that aims to provide 5th-8th grade girls in the Bloomington area with a day full of science activities to get them interested in various STEM fields. WIA typically has two exhibits, including film canister rockets and a liquid nitrogen display, in which the girls are able to interactively participate with the various experiments.

Annual event at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where engineering students and societies create exhibits to showcase their projects and teach others about engineering. This event is free and open to students, families, and community members. In the past, we've held rocket races right along Boneyard Creek!
For this competition, the team built a high-powered rocket with an active drag system capable of flying to at least 3000 feet. Placing 2nd overall, the team also predicted flight performance with and without the drag system engaged and built an on-board data collection package. See this recap article featured by the Aerospace Department for more information.
Beginning in Spring 2019, our team is participating for the first time in the Fly Your Ideas competition from Airbus. Airbus offers a unique opportunity for students worldwide to activate their pioneering spirit and innovate for the future. With support from Airbus, teams will tackle global challenges, harnessing the latest digital tools and technologies to create a safer, cleaner, better connected world. Keep checking back here for updates!

Beginning in Fall 2017, we've coordinated and hosted all-aerospace mixers in an effort to facilitate curricular and social involvement from all organizations in our wonderful department. Past activities have included speed "dating" and Family Feud with faculty, undergraduate students, and graduate students.
To ease the stress of midterm season, WIA hosts annual "pie contests" in which other organizations and individuals can bake pies to be taste tested for a small cost. The funds raised through this event are put toward our organization's participation in Relay for Life, which follows in the spring.
If you have a social event idea that you would like our organization to consider, please contact our Social Team Lead Kierstin Kim at email@example.com!
Partnering with Engineering Career Services, Engineering Ambassadors, and company HR representatives, WIA will hold resume reviews and cover letter tutorial sessions open to all, especially around the time of the fall Career Fair.
WIA is fortunate to have former members that are now prominent and established in industry willing to return to campus to help advise and mentor our members. Representing a minority group in a male-dominated field sometimes takes a little encouragement, which our alumni are happy to assist with!
